Imagine setting out to hike your favorite trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway. When you arrive, you find the lovely landscape has been decimated: all the trees have been cut down and what was once lush and beautiful is now bare and lifeless. This is the scene (both literal and symbolic) to which Isaiah prophesied. Into death he prophesied new life – “a shoot” of hope.
