David vs. Goliath

Sermon Collective - August

The legendary story of David vs. Goliath is often seen as a metaphor for the little guy vs. the big bully – or the underdog vs. the expert. Like many perceptions in life, however, there's far more to this story than meets the eye. Goliath was the real underdog here. As seemingly overpowering as he was over David, the truth is that he never stood a chance...and David knew it. Goliath had hugely underestimated David because God had been preparing David behind the scenes. This story is far more about the power of humility vs. the pretense of pride. David didn't need to "big himself up". He quietly used the underdog perception to his advantage. Meanwhile, as Goliath was blinded by his own arrogance, he didn't know that David was masterful in the art of sling throwing. It is said that expert sling throwers could project stones with such speed & precision that they could accurately hit any target within 200 meters. So for David, the giant was an easy target that day. The lesson for us? What happens behind the scenes of our lives is what determines how we deal with our key moments in life. Teachability matters. Humility matters. Our personal relationship with God REALLY matters. Victory must first be won behind the scenes.
