A Call For All

GCC Mission 2020

People. Relationships. Transformation. God's heart beats for each of these. So it should come as no surprise that our transformation into Jesus' likeness often comes through people we're in relationship with. Discipleship. Mentoring. Call it what you will. It's one of the ways people in the Bible grew in their faith and it's one of the ways we can grow in our faith today as well. Eli discipled Samuel. Elijah discipled Elisha. Paul discipled Timothy. And Jesus discipled His twelve...well, disciples! If Jesus discipled others, shouldn't we be doing it as well? This isn't a call just for some; it's a call for all!

In a culture where we can (more than) easily buy in bulk, super-size our food orders, get a cup of caffeine every few blocks at a coffee shop, upgrade our technological devices to the "bigger & better" versions, add 50 more channels to the 180 that we already get with cable TV or binge watch 45 episodes of a series on Netflix, we are full. We like having enough; we like having plenty. We like being full. Fasting - "giving up food (or something else) for a period of time in order to focus your thoughts on God". Reading that can cause a variety of thoughts: 1) "Huh? Why would I do that?"; 2) "Will God love me more if I fast?"; 3) "Is that what I need to do in order to get my prayers answered?"; 4) "Ugh - that means going hungry and being miserable. No. Thank. You." Being full vs. being hungry? Pretty sure we'd all chose the former. Being full of God and more hungry for Him? Is there even a better option?
