The Light that Overcomes the Darkness
Of all the stories within the grand Christmas story, the story of the shepherds may be my favorite. God announces the birth of the world’s Savior not to the politicians or the priests and not to the rich and famous but to a group of lonely shepherds at work in the middle of the night. That single fact gives us a world of information about who this God is, who we are, and why we should celebrate Christmas extravagantly every year.

After 400 years of silence, God first spoke to an aged and faithful priest named Zechariah. Zechariah was deeply impacted by this encounter and later prophesied that “because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace." (John 1:7-8).
